Who Wants to be a MillionWORDaire?
Ever thought about being a millionaire? What about a millionWORDaire?
Well, that's exactly what students at Cloverdale Magnet Middle School (CMMS) are focusing on these days.
One Arkansas Performance Standard in each academic area addresses
Reading across the curriculum. The standard states that: "The student
reads a minimum of 25 grade-level appropriate books or book
equivalents (approximately 1,000,000 words) per year from a variety of
subject disciplines." In order to meet this standard, the CMMS faculty initiated the annual 25 Book Campaign by dressing as their favorite book characters.
By reading 25 books, students will read approximately 1,000,000 words. Research shows that this increases vocabulary development, reading comprehension, reading stamina, and fluency. It also increases motivation and fosters an excitement for reading.
To encourage CMMS students to participate in the 25 Book Campaign, Cloverdale teachers encourage students to keep book-logs. The teachers and parents verify the number of pages or words read. After every 5 books or book equivalents a student reads, they may enter their names in a drawing for prizes. The drawing takes place each month. A numberof prizes are given away each month thanks to the generousity of Pulaski County area businesses.
